Sito Mújica’s works are organized under the name ‘Copied’, alluding to ‘non-authorship’ and an apparently limited formal originality. They have as a reference the appropriation argued in graphic exercises that move from the digital image to the technical tradition of the plastic arts. In his most recent pieces, he underlines his interest in methods of representation and the classification and identification of images in the main internet search engines and artificial intelligence platforms.
For years, Sito Mújica has been configuring a work based on the systematic copying of other people’s photographs that circulate on the Internet, using drawing and painting in a precious way, to then put them back into circulation, translated into another language. Passionate about the cognitive and cultural effects of the semantic web, Mújica has delved for more than a decade into appropriationism and revision, creating meta-works. His proposal is based on a reflective anthropological concern about the mechanisms that shape and convey representation. The social use of the individual image, the media processes of fashion, the creation through chance of electronic algorithms or the legal limits of authorship in 2.0 are among his usual themes.
